Frits Muskiet
Frits A.J. Muskiet was born in CuraƧao (the former Netherlands Antilles). After high school he went to The Netherlands to study Chemistry in the Groningen State University. He graduated in 1974 in Biochemistry and received his PhD in Mathematics and Physics in 1979 by defending a thesis on catecholamine (metabolite) producing tumors.
He specialized as a Clinical Chemist in the Groningen University Hospital from 1975 and was registered in the Dutch register of Clinical Chemists in 1980. From then he held a permanent position until his official retirement in April 2015, as a Clinical Chemist in the present University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) with activities in patient care, teaching and research. In 1995 he became a Lecturer in the Groningen School of Pharmacy and in 2000 he was appointed Professor of Pathophysiology and Clinical Chemical Analysis in the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medical Sciences.
At present he has a zero-appointment in the UMCG and is still active in research and teaching. Dr. Muskiet has a broad research interest. His current activities are in the fields of nutrition (essential fatty acids, vitamins), atherosclerosis (lipids, hyperhomocysteinemia), hemoglobinopathies/thalassemias (sickle cell disease), obstetrics/perinatology (preeclampsia, maternal and neonatal nutrition), psychiatry (autism, schizophrenia, depression), evolutionary medicine and evidence based laboratory medicine.
Until now he was (co)advisor of 32 PhD students and has been (co)author of more than 280 PubMed registered publications.
